Yay! I've translated the old traditional/folk song. ;D On laiva valmiina lähtöön
On laiva valmiina lähtöön se kaukomaille käy missä taivaalla illan tullen ei Pohjantähteä näy.
Kun nousee purjet purren ja köydet irroitetaan, käymme ystävä armas surren, sua jäämme me kaipailemaan.
Ja ellet sä luoksemme tulla vois milloinkaan uudestaan, niin kuitenkin sydämissämme sua vain aina muistellaan.
Me kanssasi riemuita saimme ja katsella maailmaa. Monta ihmettä näytit sä meille, jotka nyt meitä lohduttaa saa.
Me tiedämme, että sä lähdet vain koska muuta et voi. Ja me toivomme, että nyt sulle pian taas laulu onnesta soi.To translate Finnish lyrics properly without losing the nuances of the words is very difficult... but I'm going to give it a try. Just a basic word-to-word translation. A ship is ready to leave
A ship is ready to leave it will sail to faraway lands To a place where, at nightfall, you won't see the Northern Star
(in essence: you've travelled so far that the stars above you are now different)
The sails are raised and the ropes are untied We walk in sadness dear friend, we will miss you
Though you might never come back to see us In our hearts we will always remember you
(note: The Finnish word "riemuita" translates as: to exult, to rejoice, to triumph)
We exulted together and you helped us to see the world We saw many wondrous things now we find comfort in the memories
We know that you're leaving because there's nothing else you can do And we hope that in the future we get to sing a happy song for you
(in essence: we're hoping to see you again some day so that we can sing at our reunion) *cough* A bad translation, we knows preciousss.... But I still find this song very interesting. It reminds me of LotR and Grey Havens. But I also know the song is old - older than LotR books - so whoever wrote this wasn't inspired by Frodo. Too bad. Disclaimers: The Finnish lyrics copyright Fazer Music Co. English lyrics by me (and yes, I was inspired by Frodo ;D)

Tähti ja meripoika (by Bror Karlsson and Olavi Virta)
Tuol on iltatähti, sille laulan taivahalla kun se kimmeltää. Aatoksein kun kiitää kotimaahan kyynel poskellein mun vierähtää.
Kotirannat rakkahat on siellä mistä suunnan otin läntehen. Vaarat väijyy aina mua tiellä on monen hauta meri viimeinen.
Väsyneenä kun taas päivän töistä hetkeks seisahdan mä kannellen. Katson taivaalle, sen tähtivöistä etsin rauhoitusta sielullein.
Iltatähden kimmellyksen myötä kotihin mä laitan terveisen. Kerron, kuinka kouristaapi syöntä heitä kun mä täällä muistelen.I'll translate this one later. The song is about the sea, about leaving home and becoming a seaman. About how you feel when you're far away from home and that kind of stuff. Yes, I think you've already noticed that most Finnish songs are very melancholy (even the ones that are played in major). That's because the Finnish mentality is sort of... sad. Melancholy and thoughtful, dark yet very strong. Well, what would you expect from people living in the Nordic countries? Anyways, this song reminds me of LotR. You'll understand once you get to read the English translation.

Nah... I'll translate the song right now. I seem to be having too much time on my hands tonight. The star and the seaman
I see the evening star, I sing to it oh, how it shines bright. My thoughts go back to my homeland and I feel a tear on my face.
Familiar shores are back there I've set the course to west. To me, the danger always feels close some of us get buried in the sea.
Wearied by the day's work I stand alone on the deck. I look to the night sky, hoping the stars would bring comfort to my soul.
Watching the bright evening star I send the people back home a quiet hello. Tell them how it breaks my heart just to think of them now.
Original Finnish lyrics copyright Olavi Virta. English lyrics by me. ;D No stealing my precious work, precioussss. If you do it, I'm going to have to kill you. Or perhaps I'll let her do it. #shelob#
